In 1932 established the Department Wood-Chemical industries. From the beginning of her work prominent scientists who have received All-Union recognition.

The first Head (1932-1934) - prof. Anatoly A. Nimvitsky
Prof. Vasiliy Kozlov in 1934-1959 GG headed the Department of Wood-Chemical industries, and then in 1959-1967 GG - Department of Chemical Technology of wood. The largest Soviet Lesohimik, USSR State Prize Laureate 1-st degree, honored worker of science and technology of the RSFSR.

Prof. Gennady K. Utkin headed the Department of HTD in 1959-1978 GG Winner of the title "Honored Chemist".

In the future, the department was headed by Assoc. Galina I. Popova (1978-1984), prof. Anatoly Y. Rebrov (1984-1985), USSR State Prize Laureate Professor.  Boris K. Vakal (1986-1989).
Prof. Yuri L. Yurev (photo), chair from 1989 to now, has more than 100 scientific papers.

Department participates in the training of students in the direction of "Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology. Profile of the department - biotechnology, biological products, and nanoporous materials, ie, nanobiotechnology.

Specializations chair is very popular among students. Education students in senior courses closely linked with the scientific directions of the department. The chair is a post-graduate courses. Four teachers - graduates of the department CTW.

Now the department has 4 laboratories, equipped with several dozens of devices and equipment necessary to conduct training and research.
In the last 10 ... 15 years on the department worked through two research directions:
  • thermochemical processing of wood to obtain nanoporous materials (I. Gindulin, O. Ponomarev, T. Steben, Y. Yurev)
  • biotechnology and plant biotechnology products (asp. N. Drozdov, K. Makarova, T. Panova, A. Shchegolev)
The Department has developed new, cost-effective technologies aimed at literate processing plant resources.

Developed (in conjunction with the Department of Pharmacology, UGMA, Yekaterinburg pharmaceutical factory and OOO Uralbiofarm ") high-performance technology for biological products from vegetable raw materials:
  • new technology for the production of biological products through a phase of "fitokrip"
  • production of adaptogens and immunomodulators to improve performance under extreme stresses for knowledge workers (scientists, civil servants, heads of firms, etc.) and manual workers.
  • production of inhibitors of cancer
  • production of food dyes
  • production of therapeutic and prophylactic products for the prevention of hypertension, atherosclerosis and diabetes
  • production of food additives on the basis of local plant material

Developed (jointly with LLC "Ural technology charcoal and UNIHIM) technology thermochemical processing of wood to obtain nanoporous materials:
  • environmentally safe production of charcoal from illiquid and low-grade hardwood
  • production of the most popular brands of activated carbons on the basis of charcoal
  • production of a new nanoporous material - a modified charcoal
The Department has developed new, cost-effective technologies aimed at literate processing plant resources.
